Fondato nel 1884, il Museu Nacional de Arte Antiga (MNAA) occupa il Palazzo Alvor-Pombal, edificio del XVII secolo situato in Rua das Janelas Verdes, con vista sul Tago. La sua collezione, che conta circa 40.000 opere, comprende dipinti portoghesi ed europei, sculture, manufatti in oro e argento, mobili, ceramiche, tessuti e opere legate alle Scoperte portoghesi. Il museo è chiuso al pubblico dal 29 settembre 2025 per lavori di ristrutturazione nell’ambito del Piano portoghese per la ripresa e la resilienza; non è stata annunciata alcuna data di riapertura. Nel frattempo, alcune sezioni della collezione sono esposte in musei partner in tutto il Paese.
