Inaugurato nel 2008 dalla Fundação Oriente all’interno dell’edificio Pedro Álvares Cabral, un ex magazzino frigorifero del baccalà sul lungofiume di Alcântara, il Museu do Oriente esplora i legami tra il Portogallo e l’Asia. Le sale permanenti Portuguese Presence in Asia espongono paraventi Namban, avori indo-portoghesi e una delle più importanti collezioni portoghesi di porcellane cinesi da esportazione. La Kwok On Collection, con oltre 15.000 oggetti, documenta le arti performative asiatiche – da maschere e marionette ai costumi teatrali – e si affianca a un vivace programma di mostre temporanee.
