Fondato nel 1936 come Boston Museum of Modern Art, l'ICA è una delle più antiche istituzioni dedicate all'arte contemporanea negli Stati Uniti; nel 2006 ha inaugurato la sua nuova sede sul waterfront di Seaport. Lo studio Diller Scofidio + Renfro ha concepito l'edificio di circa 6.000 metri quadrati come un nastro continuo: la passeggiata pubblica dell'Harborwalk sale a formare la gradinata della Jill Medvedow Grandstand, per poi proseguire all'interno diventando il pavimento e il soffitto del teatro, mentre all'ultimo piano la galleria a sbalzo si spinge verso l'acqua retta da quattro imponenti capriate. Sospesa al di sotto di questa sporgenza, la Poss Family Mediatheque digrada verso il porto. Il museo non dispone di un allestimento permanente: le sale si rinnovano continuamente con mostre temporanee e nuove commissioni. L'ICA gestisce inoltre il Watershed, una sede distaccata a ingresso gratuito aperta in estate negli ex cantieri navali di East Boston, raggiungibile in traghetto direttamente dal museo.
