Read the wall texts up close: they are written by hand, on wooden panels left over from the museum's previous exhibition. The small labels beside the pictures are on handmade paper, pressed by a paper-making workshop from the Brücke-Museum's own old leaflets.

The pictures are paintings, drawings, woodcuts and watercolours from the collection, favourites hung next to rarely shown pieces, by Kirchner, Heckel, Schmidt-Rottluff, Pechstein, Nolde, Amiet and others who left the cities in the early 1900s to paint outdoors. Three contemporary contributions answer them. Lizza May David paints in dialogue with Kirchner's Violette Bäume (1914), Alina Schmuch photographs Werner Düttmann's building against the woods around it, and atelier le balto, the landscape architects who replanted the museum garden, have hung one wall of Brücke works arranged like a landscape.

It closes on 25 October. Entry is €6 (reduced €4), or €8 with the Kunsthaus Dahlem next door. Outside, the Art… Beneath Pine Trees trail adds seven new works in the garden. Closed Tuesdays.

Da non perdere

  • atelier le balto's landscape wall

Look for the wall where the garden's landscape architects hung Brücke works the way they would lay out a landscape, linking the rooms to the woods outside.

  • Kirchner's Violette Bäume (Purple Trees), 1914

Trees painted purple, the Kirchner that Lizza May David's new painting answers.

  • Kirchner's Baumgruppe auf Fehmarn, 1913

A group of trees on the Baltic island of Fehmarn, in watercolour over chalk, the image the museum uses for the whole show.

  • Schmidt-Rottluff's Birch Trunks, 1905

An early watercolour of birch trunks, made the year the Brücke group was founded.
