Lo scultore Frederic Marès (1893–1991) donò le proprie collezioni alla città di Barcelona nel 1946; due anni più tardi il museo aprì in una parte dell’antico Royal Palace of the Counts of Barcelona, accanto alla cattedrale, di cui si conserva il giardino del cortile. Le gallerie dedicate alla scultura ripercorrono la scultura ispanica dall’antichità al XIX secolo, con una netta prevalenza di figure lignee policrome e un rilievo romanico attribuito al Master of Cabestany. La sala Collector's Cabinet, articolata in 17 ambienti e definita da Marès il suo «Sentimental Museum», raccoglie ventagli, pipe, orologi, giocattoli, chiavi e fotografie della vita quotidiana ottocentesca; il suo studio-biblioteca espone invece le opere dello scultore.
