iTate Modern · Bankside
A collection display bringing together works by artists including Abbas Akhavan, Abel Rodríguez and Zheng Bo, exploring the connection between environmental and social justice.
On the floor, on white bed sheets, lie bronze plants that look like burnt fragments. Abbas Akhavan sculpted each one in wax from species native to Mesopotamia, then cast it, making a monument to the plants of a region wrecked by decades of war rather than to its people.
This is a collection display about where ecology and social justice meet, drawn from Tate's own holdings and set in a former oil and coal power station. You move from Bruce Conner's CROSSROADS, the 1946 Bikini Atoll bomb test replayed 15 times, to Minerva Cuevas's bumper cars stamped with Shell, BP and Esso logos, and Zheng Bo's film of six people getting intimate with ferns. Abbas Zahedi's new commission plugs instruments into the building's own utility pipes.
It's free, in the Natalie Bell Building, and open until 21:00 on Fridays and Saturdays. Some works rotate: Edgar Calel's piece and Gauri Gill and Rajesh Vangad's left in March 2026.
Abbas Akhavan, Study for a Monument
Bronze casts of Mesopotamian plants, enlarged and blackened like burnt fragments, laid flat on white bed sheets on the floor rather than raised up like a memorial.
Bruce Conner, CROSSROADS (1976)
Declassified footage of the 1946 underwater nuclear test at Bikini Atoll, shown 15 times at different speeds and angles, with explosions and birdsong on the soundtrack before a Terry Riley score takes over.
Minerva Cuevas, Dodgem Shell
Brightly coloured bumper cars wearing Shell, BP, Esso and Petrobras logos, from a Mexico City fairground ride where her intervention ran for eight years.
Zheng Bo, Pteridophilia I
A film of six people walking through a Taiwanese forest and getting physically, and erotically, close to the ferns.
Abel Rodríguez, The Tree of Life and Abundance
A drawing of the Nonuya founding myth: one expansive tree filled with the animals, flowers, fruits and seeds of the Amazon basin.
