Duncan Phillips eröffnete das Museum 1921 in seinem eigenen Haus am Dupont Circle – fünf Jahre bevor New York etwas Vergleichbares besaß. Den intimen, privaten Charakter hat sich der Ort bis heute bewahrt. Fast 6.000 Werke hängen in Räumen, die noch immer an ein Wohnhaus erinnern: El Greco neben Cézanne, Bonnard neben Rothko. Die Hängung folgt keiner starren Chronologie, sondern regt zu Epochen überspannenden Dialogen an. Der unbestrittene Höhepunkt ist Renoirs »Das Frühstück der Ruderer«, doch nachhaltig im Gedächtnis bleiben oft der Rothko Room und Wolfgang Laibs Installation aus duftendem Bienenwachs. Ein Flügel aus den 1960er-Jahren und das 2006 weitgehend unterirdisch angelegte Sant Building erweiterten den Bau, ohne die behagliche Atmosphäre des Stadthauses zu beeinträchtigen.
