Das American University Museum wurde 2005 im Cyrus and Myrtle Katzen Arts Center am Ward Circle eröffnet und ist mit rund 4.000 Quadratmetern Ausstellungsfläche auf drei Ebenen die größte Universitätsgalerie der Region. In saisonalen Zyklen zeigt das Haus jährlich etwa 24 Ausstellungen, mit einem klaren Schwerpunkt auf zeitgenössischer Kunst aus Washington und aller Welt. Zu den ständigen Beständen gehören die Watkins Memorial Collection mit über 6.000 Objekten, die Rothfeld Collection of Contemporary Israeli Art sowie die Corcoran Legacy Collection – mehr als 9.000 Werke, die 2018 aus der Corcoran Gallery of Art übernommen wurden und von Tizian und Dürer über Ansel Adams und Andy Warhol bis hin zur Washington Color School reichen. Die Alper Initiative for Washington Art bietet zudem einen eigens eingerichteten Forschungs- und Ausstellungsbereich für die Kunstgeschichte der Stadt.
