Untergebracht im Hôtel Carnavalet und dem angrenzenden Hôtel Le Peletier de Saint Fargeau, ist dies das älteste der Museen der Stadt Paris, seit 1880 geöffnet und nach einer Renovierung von 2016 bis 2021 neu erstanden. Die Sammlung von rund 625.000 Objekten reicht von prähistorischen Einbaumkanus und gallischen Münzen über Relikte der Französischen Revolution bis zu Jugendstil-Ladenfronten und Marcel Prousts rekonstruiertem Schlafzimmer. Vierzig Epochenräume und Galerien zeichnen die Geschichte von Paris nach – untergebracht in den eleganten Stadtpalais des 16. und 17. Jahrhunderts im Marais. Der Eintritt in die Dauerausstellung ist kostenlos.
