1977 von der Kuratorin Marcia Tucker gegründet, widmet sich das New Museum „neuer Kunst und neuen Ideen“ und setzt sich für lebende Künstler ein, noch bevor der Mainstream sie entdeckt. Sein markantes Gebäude, ein Stapel schiefer weißer Boxen, entworfen vom japanischen Büro SANAA, öffnete 2007 an der Bowery und wurde als Meilenstein zeitgenössischer Architektur gefeiert. Im März 2026 eröffnete das Museum nach einem von OMA entworfenen Erweiterungsbau wieder, der die Ausstellungsfläche verdoppelte und eine skulpturale Atriumtreppe, einen öffentlichen Platz sowie einen Sky Room im siebten Stock hinzufügte. Als sammlungsfreies Haus zeigt es ambitionierte, wechselnde Ausstellungen sowie die wiederkehrende New Museum Triennial mit aufstrebenden Künstlern.
