1936 als Boston Museum of Modern Art gegründet, zählt das ICA zu den traditionsreichsten Institutionen für Gegenwartskunst in den Vereinigten Staaten; 2006 bezog es seinen heutigen Standort an der Seaport-Waterfront. Diller Scofidio + Renfro entwarfen den rund 6.000 Quadratmeter großen Bau wie ein fortlaufendes Band: Der Bostoner Harborwalk geht fließend in die öffentliche Jill Medvedow Grandstand über, setzt sich im Inneren als Boden und Decke des Theatersaals fort und mündet im obersten Stockwerk in eine Galeriebox, die auf vier massiven Trägern spektakulär über das Hafenbecken kragt. Direkt unter diesem Überhang staffelt sich die Poss Family Mediatheque treppenförmig hinab zum Wasser. Eine feste Dauerausstellung gibt es nicht – die Galerieräume bespielt das Haus mit wechselnden Schauen und Neuaufträgen. Zudem betreibt das ICA mit The Watershed eine kostenfreie saisonale Außenstelle in einer umgebauten Werfthalle in East Boston, die vom Museum aus per Fähre erreichbar ist.
