Duncan Phillips va inaugurar aquest museu a la seva pròpia residència de Dupont Circle el 1921, cinc anys abans que Nova York tingués res de comparable, i mai n'ha perdut la dimensió íntima. Prop de 6.000 obres s'exposen en estances que conserven l'esperit d'una llar privada: El Greco al costat de Cézanne, Bonnard vora Rothko, disposats per suscitar diàlegs a través dels segles en lloc de sotmetre el visitant a una cronologia estricta. La gran joia és Le Déjeuner des canotiers de Renoir, tot i que la Rothko Room i la cambra de cera d'abelles de Wolfgang Laib són les sales que tothom recorda. L'ala de 1960 i el Sant Building de 2006, gairebé tot subterrani, el van ampliar respectant el caliu original de la casa unifamiliar.
