Fundat el 1872, el Tokyo National Museum és el museu nacional més antic del Japó i conserva la col·lecció més gran del país d’art japonès i asiàtic. Estesa en diversos edificis d’Ueno Park –el Honkan (art japonès), el Toyokan (art asiàtic), el Heiseikan (arqueologia i exposicions temporals) i la Gallery of Horyuji Treasures–, la col·lecció aplega aproximadament 120.000 objectes, entre els quals hi ha 89 Tresors Nacionals i 649 Béns Culturals Importants. Inclou ceràmica del període Jōmon, escultura budista, espases de samurai i estampes ukiyo-e del període Edo.
