Construït el 1883 per l'arquitecte Ricardo Velázquez Bosco per a l'Exposició Nacional de Mineria, aquest pavelló de ferro i vidre és l'únic supervivent dels edificis d'aquella fira. Situat al costat de l'estany del Retiro Park, avui funciona com a espai expositiu satèl·lit del Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía, on s'organitzen exposicions temporals d'art contemporani de gran format amb entrada gratuïta. La seva fàbrica de maó d'estil neoclàssic, les voltes envidrades i la decoració ceràmica de Zuloaga fan que el propi edifici sigui un reclam tan potent com les obres que acull.
