Iniciat el 1802 i mai acabat d’acord amb el projecte original, el Palácio Nacional da Ajuda es va convertir en la residència principal de la família reial portuguesa sota el rei Luís I i la reina Maria Pia a partir de 1862. Avui, convertit en palau-museu, conserva els interiors del segle XIX, amb col·leccions de mobiliari, objectes de plata, ceràmica, tèxtils, pintures i fotografies de la casa reial. Entre els espais més destacats hi ha el Throne Room, el Banqueting Hall, que encara s’utilitza per a sopars d’estat, i l’exposició Royal Table, dedicada a la vida quotidiana a taula de la cort. El Museu do Tesouro Real (Museu del Tresor Reial) ocupa l’ala oest del palau.
