Fundat el 1893 i instal·lat des del 1903 als antics dormitoris dels monjos del monestir dels Jerònims, el Museu Nacional de Arqueologia conserva la principal col·lecció de troballes prehistòriques, romanes i medievals de Portugal, així com antiguitats egípcies i antics tresors d’or. Està tancat al públic des del 18 d’abril de 2022 per una profunda renovació finançada pel Pla de Recuperació i Resiliència (PRR); la segona fase de les obres encara no té una data de reobertura anunciada.
