Fundat el 1905 per la reina Amélia, el Museu Nacional dos Coches conserva el que considera la col·lecció de carrosses d’Estat més important del món: més de 70 vehicles històrics que abracen quatre segles. Entre les peces més destacades hi ha les carrosses triomfals de l’ambaixada portuguesa davant el papa Climent XI, del 1716, i el landau en què el rei Carles I va ser assassinat el 1908. Des del 2015, la col·lecció s’exhibeix en un edifici nou, obra de Paulo Mendes da Rocha, guanyador del Premi Pritzker, davant de l’antiga Escola Reial d’Equitació, a Belém.
