Construït entre el 1877 i el 1881 per Martin Gropius i Heino Schmieden com a museu d'arts aplicades de Berlín, el Gropius Bau va patir greus danys el 1945 i va reobrir les portes el 1981 després de ser restaurat. Avui dia està gestionat pels Berliner Festspiele i no compta amb una col·lecció permanent: programa exposicions temporals de gran format i performances d'artistes contemporanis.
