افتُتح National Museum of the American Indian التابع لمؤسسة Smithsonian عام 2004 كأول متحف وطني مكرس بالكامل للشعوب الأصلية. يشغل المتحف مبنىً مكسواً بحجر Kasota الجيري ومؤلفاً من خمسة طوابق، أبدع تصميمه Douglas Cardinal (Blackfoot) ليبدو وكأنه نُحت بفعل الرياح والمياه عبر السنين. تُصاغ جميع المعارض بالتعاون مع مجتمعات السكان الأصليين وتُعرض من منظورها الخاص، مستندة إلى مجموعة مقتنيات تضم زهاء 800,000 قطعة تمتد عبر نصفي الكرة الأرضية. تشمل أبرز المعالم معرض المعاهدات «أمة لأمة» (Nation to Nation)، وقراءة الثقافة الشعبية في «أمريكيون» (Americans)، بالإضافة إلى النصب التذكاري في الهواء الطلق National Native American Veterans Memorial. ويُعد مطعم Mitsitam Native Foods Cafe، بأطباقه الإقليمية المستوحاة من مطابخ السكان الأصليين، تجربة استثنائية قائمة بذاتها تستحق الزيارة.
