تأسس MAK عام 1863 ويشغل منذ عام 1871 قصراً مصمماً بطراز عصر النهضة الجديد أبدعه المعماري Heinrich von Ferstel على شارع Stubenring، ويُعد واحداً من أبرز متاحف الفنون التطبيقية والتصميم والعمارة في أوروبا. تضم مقتنياته أثاثاً ومجوهرات من إنتاج Wiener Werkstätte، وكراسي الخشب المنحني من Thonet، وتصميمات Klimt التحضيرية لإفريز Stoclet Frieze، وخزف Du Paquier الفاخر، وفنوناً من شرق آسيا، بالإضافة إلى إحدى أروع مجموعات السجاد في العالم. وإلى جانب قاعات العرض الدائمة، ينظم المتحف معارض مؤقتة تتناول الفن المعاصر والتصميم وفن الملصقات.
