افتُتح أكبر متحف فني في النمسا عام 1891 داخل مبنى فخم على جادة Ringstrasse صممه Gottfried Semper وKarl von Hasenauer، ويقابله نظيره التوأم Natural History Museum عبر ساحة Maria-Theresien-Platz. يحتضن المتحف المجموعات الإمبراطورية لأسرة Habsburg: من بينها Picture Gallery التي تضم أكبر مجموعة في العالم من لوحات Pieter Bruegel the Elder إلى جانب أعمال Raphael وTitian وVermeer وRubens وVelázquez؛ وقسم Kunstkammer بمقتنياته الفريدة ومنها تحفة Saliera للنحات Cellini؛ فضلاً عن الآثار المصرية والشرق أدنى واليونانية والرومانية. كما يُعد المقهى الكائن تحت القبة معلماً يستحق الزيارة بحد ذاته.
