تأسس Museo Arqueológico Nacional (MAN) عام 1867 بمرسوم ملكي من Isabella II، ويستعرض تاريخ شبه الجزيرة الإيبيرية منذ عصور ما قبل التاريخ حتى مطلع العصر الحديث. ويشغل المتحف مبنىً كلاسيكياً جديداً مهيباً من القرن التاسع عشر صممه Francisco Jareño، متشاركاً إياه مع National Library of Spain بالقرب من Plaza de Colón. تشمل مقتنياته حقب الحضارات الإيبيرية، والرومانية، والقوطية الغربية، والإسلامية، والمسيحية في إسبانيا، إلى جانب الآثار المصرية، واليونانية، وحضارات الشرق الأدنى القديم، وتتصدرها قطع أيقونية مثل سيدة إلتشي وكنز غواراثار القوطي الغربي. وقد شهد المتحف مشروع تجديد شامل بين عامي 2008 و2014 أضفى طابعاً عصرياً على قاعاته وأسلوب عرضه الزمني.
