يرتفع مبنى Alte Nationalgalerie كمعبد أثري في جزيرة المتاحف (Museum Island) المدرجة ضمن مواقع التراث العالمي لليونسكو، وقد شُيّد بين عامي 1867 و1876 وفقاً لمخططات August Stüler. تغطي مقتنيات المعرض الحقبة الممتدة من الثورة الفرنسية حتى الحرب العالمية الأولى، متمثلة في الكلاسيكية الحديثة والرومانسية والانطباعية وحركات الانفصال الفني. وتضم أبرز معروضاته لوحة "الراهب على شاطئ البحر" (The Monk by the Sea) للفنان Caspar David Friedrich، وأكبر مجموعة في العالم لأعمال Adolph Menzel، بالإضافة إلى تمثال "مجموعة الأميرات" (Princess Group) لـ Schadow، ونفائس الانطباعية الفرنسية بريشة Manet وMonet وRenoir.
