وهب النحات Frederic Marès (1893–1991) مجموعاته إلى Barcelona عام 1946، وافتُتح المتحف بعد عامين في جزء من Royal Palace of the Counts of Barcelona القديم، بجوار الكاتدرائية، حيث لا تزال حديقة الفناء قائمة. وتستعرض صالات المنحوتات فيه تاريخ النحت الإسباني من العصور القديمة حتى القرن التاسع عشر، وتطغى عليها تماثيل خشبية متعددة الألوان، من بينها نقش رومانسكي يُنسب إلى Master of Cabestany. أما Collector's Cabinet المؤلف من 17 غرفة، والذي كان Marès يطلق عليه اسم "Sentimental Museum"، فيضم مجموعة كثيفة من المراوح والغلايين والساعات والألعاب والمفاتيح وصور الحياة اليومية في القرن التاسع عشر، فيما تعرض مكتبة-دراسة النحات أعماله الخاصة.
