Basilica of San Clemente 堪称罗马历史的微缩缩影。如今所见的地面教堂建于1100年前后,正下方矗立着一座公元4世纪的早期基督教宗座圣殿;而这座圣殿又是建在一座公元1世纪的罗马民居之上——该民居曾短暂用作早期秘密聚会场所,后在2世纪改建为供奉波斯神祇密特拉的密特拉神庙(Mithraeum)。在此之下,甚至还保留着在公元64年罗马大火中毁坏的罗马共和国时期地基。仅需一次探访,便能由浅入深,垂直穿越近两千年来未曾中断的人类文明印记。 仅地面上层的圣殿便足以令人流连忘返:半圆形后殿中那幅以“生命之树”为主题的12世纪马赛克镶嵌画美轮美奂,精巧华美的科斯马蒂风格大理石拼花地面(Cosmatesque)铺展其间,中世纪的唱诗班隔栏(schola cantorum)亦完好无损。但这里最令人心驰神往的,依然是步入地下深处。4世纪的遗址层中留存着虽已斑驳却摄人心魄的湿壁画,信徒当年留下的涂鸦更被视为最早由意大利语(而非拉丁语)书写的文字实证之一。再往深处探寻,密特拉神庙依然保留着当年的祭坛与古代秘修场所特有的幽闭氛围,耳畔甚至能清晰听见地下暗河淙淙流过的声响。 这处胜地足以颠覆你对罗马这座城市的认知。它所呈现的层累结构绝非仅是抽象的考古剖面,而是罗马各个历史时期层层叠筑、生生不息的具象见证。自1677年以来,圣殿一直由爱尔兰多明我会修道士悉心打理,维护完好,游览动线与历史呈现皆极为讲究。
