Ordrupgaard · Charlottenlund
Major retrospective of Finland's "Snow Painter" Pekka Halonen (1865-1933): hushed winter landscapes and Nordic symbolism from the Tuusula artists' colony.
You walk into the last room and the floor turns white: wool carpet, white poufs that Radioupdate's reviewer took for snowballs, and Halonen's winter canvases all round, where the white "glints in every colour of the rainbow". It's the one snowdrift near Copenhagen you're meant to sit down in.
This is Halonen's first big retrospective in Denmark, 85 works across three halls, grouped by theme and ending on Finnish nature, then snow. Tree-trunk benches and a soundtrack of nature sounds and period music sit between them. He studied briefly with Gauguin in Paris, and Ordrupgaard's own Gauguins hang about 20 metres away, underground.
Kristeligt Dagblad wrote that he "could paint snow like no other Nordic artist", and Politiken called it world class. Kulturkupeen's one complaint: the staging looks almost too slick for paintings that need none of it. On Wednesdays it's open until 19:00, and free for students and under-27s from 16:00. It closes on 10 January 2027.
Pekka Halonen这位芬兰“雪之画家”的大型回顾展:静谧的冬日风景,以及来自Tuusula艺术家聚居地的北欧象征主义。这里汇集了所有哥本哈根的冬天通常缺席的雪景。
The Lynx Hunter (1900)
A man in profile holds a rifle and stares hard off to one side against soft snow; it was one of two Halonens in Finland's first pavilion at the 1900 Paris World's Fair.
Washing on the Ice (1900)
Look for a woman washing clothes through a hole in white ice, with conifers and yellow and red wooden houses behind her.
Halonen's skis
His actual skis are in the show, a reminder that he painted winter outdoors at below minus 30, until his brushes froze.
The tomatoes
Between the snowscapes are still lifes of cabbages and tomatoes; Politiken's headline singled out the bright red tomatoes next to the purple snow.
