One mosaic shows an alien spaceship abducting a Marshalls store. Another tiles a snowy street with snowmen, an AMC movie theater and a handwritten sign that reads "The World Needs You". Kids aged 6 to 12 from Boston youth clubs made them.

There are a dozen panels, one per club, made over about eight months with the Brooklyn artist Kelly Chen. First the students toured the MFA to see how Edward Hopper and Allan Rohan Crite painted cities, then went on "deep listening walks" through their own neighborhoods with recorders. You stand under three speakers playing what they caught: kids interviewing each other, car horns, playground slides. Two audiovisual works by Chen sit alongside.

It's one gallery, the Edward H. Linde Gallery (Gallery 168) in the Linde Family Wing, included with $30 admission. It closes 25 October, and then the mosaics go back to the clubs that made them. The museum warns that the old CRT televisions give off a high-pitched sound.

看点

  • The Marshalls abduction

Look for a spaceship beaming a Marshalls discount store off the street, one of a dozen panels each made by a single youth club.

  • The snow-day panel

Tiled snowflakes fall over snowmen and an AMC movie theater, beside a handwritten sign reading "The World Needs You".

  • The speakers overhead

Three speakers above the mosaics play audio collages from the students' listening walks: children interviewing each other, car horns and playground slides.
