Gmach spowija trójpoziomowa, ażurowa powłoka w odcieniu brązu, której perforowany wzór nawiązuje do tradycyjnych żelaznych krat kowalskich, tworzonych niegdyś przez zniewolonych rzemieślników na amerykańskim Południu. Dziesięć kondygnacji – w tym pięć podziemnych – kieruje zwiedzających najpierw na sam dół. To tam History Galleries rozpoczynają narrację od transatlantyckiego handlu niewolnikami, prowadząc rampami w górę przez epokę segregacji rasowej aż po współczesność, zanim goście dotrą do położonych wyżej galerii poświęconych społeczności i kulturze. Spośród ponad 40 000 eksponatów na wystawie prezentowanych jest około 3500 obiektów – od wagonu kolejowego z epoki praw Jima Crowa, przez który można przejść, po słynny Mothership formacji Parliament-Funkadelic.
