Inside, warped, reflective panels throw your own figure back at you. The guest curator, Huang Ya-li, directed Sunday Walkers (2015), a film about the Windmill Poetry Society, Taiwanese poets who tried to bring Surrealism to 1930s Taiwan while writing in Japanese, and the show is cut together like his film.

Six chapters across the first and third floors set about 200 Taiwanese works and about 100 Japanese ones among hundreds of documents, mostly from the colonial period. The watercolourist Ishikawa Kinichiro hangs beside his Taiwanese students, Chen Cheng-po among them. Later rooms turn to wartime mobilisation and to the crackdown that began with the 1947 February 28 Incident, which cost the poets' Li Chang-jui his life.

Tokyo Art Beat counts more than 800 items, many tucked along a route that winds rather than runs one way. Tickets are ¥2,000, free for primary-school age and under. November Fridays run until 20:00. Closed Mondays (open 12 October and 23 November), plus 13 October and 24 November.
