Diego Rivera and the Construction of Modern Art in 20th-Century Mexico

Trwa9 czerwca 2026 – 13 grudnia 2026·20,50 €

A retrospective at Villa Caffarelli of over 140 works showing how Diego Rivera and his contemporaries forged modern Mexican art from pre-Columbian heritage and post-revolution ideals.

In 1920 Diego Rivera drew the marble bust of Epicurus that belongs to the Capitoline Museums. The charcoal sheet itself lives in Philadelphia, so a facsimile hangs in the section on Rivera in Italy, in the same museum as the bust.

Thirty of the 140-plus works are Rivera's. The rest comes from Frida Kahlo, Orozco, Siqueiros, Tamayo, María Izquierdo and others, in four sections. The first covers Mexico City's Academia de San Carlos, which sent its best students to Rome on grants: the 19th-century Erasmus, minus the landlord in San Lorenzo who wants six months upfront. The last covers the Surrealist and fantastic art that ran against official Muralism. The murals themselves can't travel, so Rivera's wall work arrives as lithographs and Tina Modotti's photographs.

Per the museum's press note, the exhibition ticket is €15 (€13 reduced), and weekend guided visits in Italian cost €7 more. The show is in Villa Caffarelli, open daily 9:30 to 19:30, until 13 December.
