Muzeum mieści się w Aljube – budynku, który przez większą część swojej historii służył jako więzienie, a w latach 1928–1965 był więzieniem politycznym – i poświęcone jest walce z portugalską dyktaturą trwającą od 1926 do 1974 roku. Kolejne piętra przedstawiają cenzurę, działalność policji politycznej PIDE, przesłuchania i tortury, maleńkie cele izolacyjne zwane „curros”, walkę antykolonialną oraz rewolucję 25 kwietnia 1974 roku. W podziemiach można oglądać pozostałości archeologiczne z okresu rzymskiego i islamskiego, a z najwyższego piętra roztacza się widok na rzekę.
