Założone przez malarza Antoniego Tàpiesa w 1984 roku i znane dziś jako Museu Tàpies, muzeum gromadzi jedną z najpełniejszych kolekcji jego twórczości, w większości przekazaną przez Antoniego i Teresę Tàpies. Zostało otwarte w 1990 roku w dawnej oficynie wydawniczej Montaner y Simón (1880–82) – jednym z wczesnych dzieł architektury modernistycznej autorstwa Lluísa Domènecha i Montanera, a zarazem pierwszym budynkiem w Eixample, który wprowadził do centrum miasta eksponowaną cegłę i żelazo. Tàpies zwieńczył fasadę swoją splątaną drucianą rzeźbą Núvol i cadira (Cloud and Chair). Obok zmieniających się wystaw twórczości Tàpiesa muzeum prezentuje wystawy sztuki współczesnej i prowadzi specjalistyczną bibliotekę sztuki, mieszczącą się na oryginalnych półkach oficyny.
