Fondato nel 1908 in occasione del giubileo dell'imperatore Franz Joseph e inaugurato nel 1918, il Technisches Museum Wien occupa un imponente edificio storicista progettato da Hans Schneider sulla Mariahilfer Straße, a pochi passi da Schönbrunn. Le sue collezioni spaziano dall'automobile di Siegfried Marcus alla vettura elettrica Lohner-Porsche e all'aliante Lilienthal, fino alla tuta spaziale di Franz Viehböck e a una delle maggiori raccolte di strumenti musicali dell'Austria.
