Fondato nel 1869 e situato di fronte a Central Park, nell'Upper West Side di Manhattan, l'American Museum of Natural History si estende su 21 edifici collegati tra loro e circa 45 sale espositive che custodiscono oltre 34 milioni di esemplari. I visitatori vi giungono per le celebri sale dedicate ai dinosauri e ai fossili, per il modello di balenottera azzurra sospeso nella Hall of Ocean Life e per i famosi diorami sulla fauna selvatica di mammiferi africani e nordamericani. Il Rose Center for Earth and Space e il Gilder Center for Science, Education, and Innovation, inaugurato di recente, testimoniano l'impegno del museo nella ricerca contemporanea.
