Inaugurato nel 1998 in un’ex stazione di pompaggio dell’acquedotto di Lisbona, sul Largo do Chafariz de Dentro, Museu do Fado racconta la storia del fado dalle origini ottocentesche nella capitale fino ai giorni nostri. L’esposizione permanente interattiva ripercorre la presenza del fado sui palcoscenici, alla radio, al cinema e in televisione, l’evoluzione della chitarra portoghese, l’atmosfera delle case di fado e le vite di centinaia di interpreti, con postazioni d’ascolto disseminate lungo il percorso. Tra strumenti, costumi, spartiti e trofei sono esposti anche dipinti come O Fado di José Malhoa; il museo gestisce inoltre un archivio sonoro, un centro di documentazione e una scuola di chitarra portoghese.
