Aliyah Aziz, Bret Parenteau, Kite and Nathan Ivanco treat image noise as audio noise, drawing on punk, noise and DIY music scenes to make distorted, glitchy work.
Pick up Aliyah Aziz's Probing Body and touch something with the black tip of the stick. It turns that object's electromagnetic frequencies into sound you can hear. The curator's essay says the work "invites you to pick it up and wear it".
All four artists also perform in noise and DIY music scenes, and the show treats grainy, degraded images the way that music treats distortion. Kite has two Hi8 video collages, and Bret Parenteau has a video shot in northern Manitoba with his own soundtrack. Nathan Ivanco shows two large charcoal works, made by lifting charcoal off a drawing with strips of tape. The videos play on TV boxes modelled on the rough furniture the curator, Sameen Mahboubi, once built for their own bedroom with a shop teacher's help.
No critic has reviewed it yet. It's in Gallery 44's Main Space, Suite 120 of 401 Richmond, free to enter, open Tuesday to Saturday until 5pm, and it closes 7 November.
Aliyah Aziz, Probing Body
Pick up the stick probe and touch things with its black tip: it turns their electromagnetic frequencies into audio.
Kite, hands
A Hi8 video collage that counts to five forever, built on the Shepard scale illusion of a pitch rising or falling without end.
Bret Parenteau, Wekusko
A video collage of the thicket around Wekusko Provincial Park in northern Manitoba, where the lowlands meet the Precambrian Shield, scored by Parenteau as B.P.
Nathan Ivanco's charcoal transfers
Two large charcoal pieces made without a photocopier: strips of tape pulled charcoal off a drawing and pressed it onto a blank sheet.
Kite, dissolve our own presence into absence
A second Hi8 video collage that turns, without words, on the Santa Rosa Mission in California as a site of violence against Native Americans.
You want photographs on walls: much of it is video, sound and a probe you handle.
