Newly sewn women's garments recreated from the 1100s to the early 1500s, by the Medieval Museum at the Swedish History Museum.

The pink of the 1100s overdress comes from cochineal, which is dried scale insects, and its sleeves flare at the wrist because the woman wearing it wasn't expected to work. Also on show is a craftswoman's dress in undyed wool, cut from rectangles and wedges so that no cloth goes to waste.

Medieval Museum seamstress Åsa Dahlstedt made all 14 outfits, using fabrics plant-dyed by Historical Textiles' Maria Neijman. Each copies a real source: a Gotland Madonna, graves in Greenland, and the tomb of Queen Katarina Sunesdotter, which is in this same museum. The dresses run from a Sigtuna merchant's wife in the 1020s to a Stockholm one in the 1520s. You watch plain wedges of wool turn into stiff bodices and fur-lined sleeves.

It closes on 1 November. Entry is the museum ticket (180 SEK, free under 19, half price Wednesdays 17:00 to 20:00, no booking). Dahlstedt guides tours on 17 and 18 October, and the short film is in Swedish only.

  • The cochineal-pink 1100s dress

Look for the rose overdress dyed with dried scale insects, long enough to fold over the belly, with wrist-flared sleeves the museum says weren't made for working in.

  • The burgomaster's wife, late 1300s

A cochineal-red overdress embroidered all over with freshwater pearls, its big armholes edged in rabbit fur to show the tight indigo dress beneath.

  • The queen's tomb dress

A wine-red, goose-eye patterned wool overdress pleated from the waist up, copied from Queen Katarina Sunesdotter's 1200s tomb, now in this museum.

  • The Sigtuna dress from the 1020s

A needle case on a chain hangs from a ring brooch, both recreated from a woman's grave at Häggvik in Sollentuna.

  • The merchant's wife, 1520s

A black wool overdress with its wide sleeves pinned up at the shoulder to show the fur lining, over a red dress with silk-lined cuffs.
