בנייתו של Palácio Nacional da Ajuda החלה בשנת 1802, אך הוא מעולם לא הושלם על פי התוכנית המקורית. משנת 1862 שימש הארמון כמעונם העיקרי של משפחת המלוכה הפורטוגלית, בתקופת שלטונם של המלך Luís I והמלכה Maria Pia. כיום פועל בו מוזיאון־ארמון, המשמר את חללי הפנים מהמאה ה־19 ואת אוספי הריהוט, כלי הכסף, הקרמיקה, הטקסטיל, הציורים והתצלומים של חצר המלוכה. בין מוקדי העניין: חדר הכס, אולם המשתאות, המשמש עדיין לארוחות ממלכתיות, ותצוגת השולחן המלכותי, העוסקת בחיי היומיום סביב שולחן האוכל בחצר. האגף המערבי של הארמון מאכלס את Museu do Tesouro Real (מוזיאון האוצר המלכותי).
