Fossil Pokémon such as Tyrantrum and Archeops are set side by side with the real fossils that inspired them, including SUE the T. rex. North American debut of the touring Japanese exhibition.
You walk in under Excavator Pikachu perched on top of an Aerodactyl. Inside, every fossil Pokémon gets a real partner: Lileep, a Pokémon modelled on a sea lily, stands beside a 180-million-year-old crinoid slab, and Omanyte and Omastar sit with actual ammonites.
This is the touring show from Tokyo's National Museum of Nature and Science, outside Japan for the first time. Game fossils sit on blue backgrounds and real ones on red, so you always know which is which, and the games' soundtracks play throughout. The Chicago Reader called it "relatively small" and "a cute and pleasant experience", done in 40 minutes; an oprainfall reviewer photographing everything took an hour. A cast of SUE's skull, the most famous head in Chicago, now plays straight man to Tyrantrum.
It needs a timed add-on ticket on top of general admission, capped daily, so buy ahead. Ticket holders get a promo Archeops card, and the shop across the hall admits exhibition ticket holders only, five items each.

You want a big dinosaur show: the Chicago Reader found it small, done in under 40 minutes.
Under-3s get into the museum free. A family visiting with Pokémon-fan kids suggests 30 to 45 minutes inside and arriving 30 minutes before your entry slot.
