iVan Gogh Museum · Museumplein
The first retrospective in the Netherlands devoted to James McNeill Whistler (1834–1903): painter, printmaker, aesthete and enfant terrible.
תצוגה מקדימה: נכתב לפני פתיחת התערוכה
Reviewing this same retrospective at Tate Britain in May 2026, Jonathan Jones of the Guardian called it a "luscious, seductive blockbuster" and said Whistler's mother looks like "a carving from a medieval tomb". The Telegraph's Alastair Sooke liked the "crisp" storytelling but counted "too many" reproductions of works that couldn't travel.
Amsterdam's version, made with Tate, has some 100 works: the mother herself, lent by the Musée d'Orsay, the Thames nocturnes, the White Girls series and life-sized society portraits. The museum adds Vincent's view. You can read what he wrote to his sister about that portrait: "When I think of Mother she too appears like that to me." One loan, Effie Deans, only had to cross Museumplein from the Rijksmuseum.
It's included in the museum ticket (€25, €26 from January, under-18s free), with timed entry booked online and an audio tour you can add when you book. Fridays run until 21:00. For Whistler's Amsterdam etchings, see the companion show at The Mesdag Collection in The Hague.
Arrangement in Grey and Black: Portrait of the Painter's Mother
Anna Whistler sits in black against grey on a canvas over 1.6 metres wide; the Guardian called her face "rigid, lightless and cold".
The Thames nocturnes
Look for the night views of the river, among them Nocturne: Blue and Silver, Chelsea, lent by Tate.
Portrait of George W. Vanderbilt
One of the life-sized society portraits: the American millionaire painted on a canvas more than two metres tall.
Arrangement in Yellow and Gray: Effie Deans
A near two-metre full-length figure in yellow and grey, lent by the Rijksmuseum across the square.
Under-18s get in free. The museum also runs painting workshops alongside the show where you make your own Nocturne.
