Das 2006 von Mitchell und Emily Wei Rales gegründete Glenstone Museum bettet rund 1.300 Werke der Nachkriegs- und Gegenwartskunst in eine rund 93 Hektar große Landschaft aus Wiesen, Wäldern und Bächen ein, etwa 25 km nordwestlich der Innenstadt von Washington. Das Herzstück bildet das 2018 fertiggestellte Gebäude Pavilions von Thomas Phifer: Auf rund 19.000 Quadratmetern gruppieren sich elf aus gegossenen Betonquadern errichtete Einzelkünstler-Räume um einen knapp 1.700 Quadratmeter großen, nach oben hin offenen Water Court. Im Außenbereich schlängeln sich Pfade vorbei an monumentalen Werken von Jeff Koons, Richard Serra, Andy Goldsworthy und Felix Gonzalez-Torres, eingebettet in eine Landschaftsarchitektur von Peter Walker mit rund 8.000 neu gepflanzten Bäumen. Der Eintritt und das Parken sind stets kostenlos, ein vorab gebuchtes Zeitfensterticket ist jedoch erforderlich – das Museum begrenzt den Einlass auf etwa 600 Besucher pro Tag und gewährt Kindern unter 12 Jahren keinen Zutritt.
