Das 2016 im Stadtteil Ryogoku eröffnete Museum befindet sich dort, wo Katsushika Hokusai den größten Teil seines Lebens verbrachte. Es beherbergt mehr als 1.800 Gemälde, Skizzen, Holzschnitte und persönliche Gegenstände des Künstlers. Das kantige, mit Spiegelflächen verkleidete Gebäude wurde von der mit dem Pritzker-Preis ausgezeichneten Architektin Kazuyo Sejima entworfen. Eine Dauerausstellung im 4. Obergeschoss, „AURORA“, zeichnet anhand originalgetreuer hochauflösender Reproduktionen und eines rekonstruierten Ateliers Hokusais Leben und Arbeitsweise nach. Sonderausstellungen zeigen wechselnde Originalwerke aus der Sammlung.
