SOMPO Museum of Art occupies a striking curved, steel-plated building at the base of the Sompo Japan headquarters tower in Nishi-Shinjuku. Its collection grew from a 1978 bequest of works by Japanese oil painter Seiji Togo and today numbers roughly 640 pieces, anchored by Vincent van Gogh's "Sunflowers" (1888), acquired at a record-breaking 1987 Christie's auction. The museum also holds works by Gauguin, Cézanne, Renoir and Grandma Moses, and mounts a rotating program of major loan exhibitions.
