Das Japan Folk Crafts Museum (Nihon Mingeikan) wurde 1936 vom Philosophen und Kunstkritiker Yanagi Soetsu gegründet. Er prägte den Begriff „mingei“ (Volkskunsthandwerk), um die Schönheit alltäglicher, von anonymen Kunsthandwerkern gefertigter Gegenstände zu würdigen. Das Museum ist in einem traditionellen japanischen Gebäude mit einem aus Tochigi hierher versetzten Tor aus der Meiji-Zeit untergebracht und beherbergt rund 17.000 Werke, darunter Keramiken, Textilien, Lackarbeiten und Holzarbeiten aus Japan und anderen Ländern. In den Hauptgalerien sind wechselnde Sonderausstellungen zu sehen, ergänzt durch eine kleinere Präsentation der ständigen Sammlung. Das angrenzende West Building, der frühere Wohnsitz von Yanagi, ist an ausgewählten Tagen für Besucherinnen und Besucher geöffnet.
