At first glance the glass cloches look like small temple stupas, each one lit over a pale, delicate flower. Then you read Ezzam Rahman's label: every petal is dead skin he peeled and scraped from his own feet, with his nails as well. It's the only bouquet in Singapore you'll be glad is kept under glass.

This is SAM's Learning Gallery, eight works by five Singaporean artists in one room, themed on childhood. Chen Sai Hua Kuan stretched a single bungee rope taut along the room's contours, beside a one-minute video of him letting a similar cord fly loose on a Kaliningrad building site. Han Sai Por's Black Forest is a burnt forest of wood and charcoal. David Chan's Animal Roulette cuts up toy animals and reassembles them into named, invented species.

The room also has an interactive wall and a programmes corner. It's on Level 1, Gallery 2, open 10am to 7pm daily, and free for everyone.

  • Here's who I am, I am what you see (2015)

Flowers on two second-hand wooden tables under glass bell jars, each petal formed from dead skin Ezzam Rahman scraped from his feet.

  • Space Drawing 14 (2025)

One continuous bungee rope, made for this room, stretched taut along the gallery's walls; nearby, Space Drawing 5 shows a released cord ricocheting across a derelict Kaliningrad site.

  • Black Forest (2024)

Han Sai Por's charred forest of wood and charcoal; look closely for the few branches she left unburnt.

  • Animal Roulette (2005)

Three display cases of plastic toy animals cut apart and glued back together as imaginary creatures, each with its own printed name label.

  • Nguan's Untitled, from "Singapore"

Five street portraits of strangers in Singapore, from the photobook the New York Times Magazine named one of the year's ten best.
