1938 von dem Sammler Jeon Hyeong-pil (Künstlername Kansong) unter dem Namen Bohwagak gegründet, war es Koreas erstes privates Kunstmuseum. Der wegweisende moderne Architekt Park Gil-ryong entwarf das Gebäude, um Nationalschätze vor Plünderungen während der japanischen Kolonialherrschaft zu bewahren – darunter eine Seladonvase, die für den Preis von 20 Häusern mit Ziegeldach erworben wurde, und das Manuskript Hunminjeongeum. Heute wird das Museum von der Kansong Art and Culture Foundation betrieben und öffnet seine Türen für die Öffentlichkeit weiterhin nur zu zwei kostenpflichtigen Ausstellungen pro Jahr. Jede davon greift auf die Sammlung mit zwölf Nationalschätzen und Dutzenden weiteren Schätzen zurück, die Seladon aus der Goryeo-Zeit, Malerei und Kalligrafie der Joseon-Zeit sowie buddhistische Skulpturen umfasst.

Open to the public only during two annual exhibition periods: a spring show (late April-early May) and an autumn show (late September-early October), each running roughly 6-8 weeks. During an exhibition the museum opens Tuesday-Sunday 10:00-18:00, closed Mondays, by advance online reservation only via kansong.org. Outside these exhibition windows the museum is closed to visitors. As of 24 September 2026 no autumn 2026 exhibition dates had been announced yet.
