Die Galleria Colonna zählt zu den am besten gehüteten Geheimnissen Roms, nicht zuletzt, weil sie nur am Samstagvormittag für die Öffentlichkeit zugänglich ist. Bis heute dient sie der Familie Colonna, die hier seit über zwanzig Generationen ansässig ist, als privater Wohnsitz. Die Ende des 17. Jahrhunderts errichtete Galerie entpuppt sich als 76 Meter langes Glanzstück barocker Extravaganz. Vergoldete Spiegel, Kristallleuchter, mehrfarbiger Marmor und ein Deckenfresko der Schlacht von Lepanto – der stolzeste Moment der Familie, als Marcantonio II Colonna die päpstliche Flotte befehligte – erzeugen eine Kulisse irgendwo zwischen Kunstmuseum und barockem Bühnenbild. Die Kunstsammlung ist hochkarätig: An den Wänden versammeln sich Meisterwerke von Bronzino, Tintoretto, Guercino, Guido Reni, Salvator Rosa, Vanvitelli und weiteren Größen. In der Marmortreppe zeugt zudem eine Kanonenkugel, die dort bei der Belagerung Roms im Jahr 1849 einschlug, bis heute unberührt von der Geschichte. Wer den Rundgang um das Appartamento Principessa Isabelle im Erdgeschoss erweitert, betritt Räume, die wie ein außergewöhnlich herrschaftliches Wohnzimmer anmuten – was sie im Grunde auch sind. Das Besondere an diesem Ort ist das Zusammenspiel aus herausragender Malerei, überwältigender Barockarchitektur und dem Gefühl, nicht bloß ein Museum zu besichtigen, sondern in einer privaten Residenz zu Gast zu sein.
