Sir John Soane verwandelte drei benachbarte Stadthäuser in eines der außergewöhnlichsten persönlichen Museen der Welt. Jede noch so kleine Fläche ist bedeckt: römische Antiken, Architekturmodelle, Gemälde (darunter Hogarths A Rake's Progress) und ägyptische Sarkophage. Die Krypta im Untergeschoss verströmt eine wahrhaft eindringliche Atmosphäre. Das Museum bewahrt alles so, wie es bei Soanes Tod im Jahr 1837 war – bis hin zu den Spiegeln, mit denen er Licht in fensterlose Räume lenkte. Klein, intensiv und mit nichts anderem vergleichbar.
