You walk into one room and smell it before you see anything: carnation, lily and rose, distilled from flowers, drift through Phantom Herbarium. On the wall hang notebooks whose marks were left by plants as they dried, not drawn by the artist, and a vitrine holds dried plants cut into geometric shapes.

This is Erdoğmuş's first institutional solo show in Turkey, four decades of work with plants, minerals, handmade paper and chemical solutions. The title is the fine-structure constant, the physics number for how light and matter interact. The entrance rooms lay out his methods, then the main gallery moves from light to darkness, ending in a dim installation with a staircase that leads nowhere. Al-Monitor called the show "a long-overdue reckoning".

Take it slowly. The Watermarks are white on white, and staff open the Logbooks' box frames at intervals to turn their pages. It's in Gallery 2. Tickets are 450 TL, free for under-24s and for everyone on Thursdays, when Arter stays open until 20:00.

Tipp der Redaktion

You smell carnation, lily and rose before you see the Phantom Herbarium, where the notebooks were marked by drying plants, not the artist's hand. Al-Monitor called the show "a long-overdue reckoning". Give it time: much is white on white.

Nicht verpassen

  • Phantom Herbarium

Look for the vitrine of dried plants sectioned into geometric forms and the notebooks printed by drying plants, while scents of carnation, lily and rose fill the room.

  • Untitled (Logbooks), 1998–1999

Fold-out notebooks on Nepalese lokta paper, layered with images from old schoolbooks and newspaper clippings; staff open the box frames at intervals and unfold the pages.

  • Watermarks (Wasserzeichen)

Carnation, orchid and lily forms set into the paper fibres themselves, white on white, hung in symmetrical pairs like a calligrapher's practice sheets.

  • Rosa Damascena Molecular Structure (Chiral Pair)

Convex round mirrors laid out like planets in the molecular shape of rose fragrance, bending the room and you back at yourself.

  • Untitled (Weltschmerz)

A dark space of large mineral-toned works on paper, a staircase that leads nowhere, and phone videos of wind, water and a passing train looping on small screens.

Nichts für dich, wenn

You're short on time: much of it, like the white-on-white Watermarks, only shows up to slow looking.

Mit Kindern

Entry is free for anyone under 24. The last room, Untitled (Weltschmerz), is dark, with low light and video with sound.
