1881 gegründet und 1903 in sein heutiges, eigens errichtetes neo-mamlukisches Gebäude umgezogen, beherbergt das Museum of Islamic Art eine der umfangreichsten Sammlungen islamischer Artefakte weltweit. Rund 4.500 Objekte werden in 25 Sälen auf zwei Stockwerken gezeigt – ausgewählt aus einem Gesamtbestand von über 100.000 Stücken. Die Sammlung reicht von der Umayyaden-Dynastie im 7. Jahrhundert bis zum Osmanischen Reich des 19. Jahrhunderts und umfasst fein geschnitzte Holzarbeiten, Keramik, Metallarbeiten, Glas, Kristall, Textilien sowie seltene Koranmanuskripte mit Kalligrafie in Silbertinte. Zu den bedeutendsten Stücken zählen ein Schlüssel zur Kaaba aus mamlukischer Zeit sowie Textilien mit altkufischen Inschriften. Im Januar 2014 wurde das Museum durch einen Autobombenanschlag auf ein nahegelegenes Polizeihauptquartier schwer beschädigt; nach umfassender Restaurierung öffnete es 2017 wieder seine Türen.
